ResortQuest Outer Banks Attractions

All through history, mariners have had to bravely navigate the watery perils that exist off the coast of our barrier islands.  “The Graveyard of the Atlantic” got its name as hundreds of ships fell victim to the wrath of our violent storms, threatening currents, and treacherous shoals.  These menacing waters were a crucial aspect in the birth of our lighthouses.

Wildlife, culture and 500 years of mystery. The Outer Banks is a natural and historical wonderland and features the finest in cultural attractions. Museums, parks, gardens and nature reserves reflect the area’s rich history and tradition.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse

The 158-foot tall Currituck Beach Lighthouse has been in service since 1873. The Victorian beacon and its original keeper's quarters are open to the public for tours. If you have the fortitude to make it to the top of the 214 stairs, you'll be treated to an amazing bird's-eye view of the island. The lighthouse is steps from Corolla Village's historic chapel, post office, general store and schoolhouse. The Parker House and Griggs House, also in the village, are good examples of early Outer Banks architecture.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the nation and is, undoubtedly, one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Outer Banks.  Built in 1870, it is the tallest lighthouse in the nation at a massive 208 feet.  In 1999, the lighthouse had to be moved to its current location…as beach erosion threatened its existence.  Located on Route 12 in Buxton.

Ocracoke Lighthouse

Built in 1823, Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest (and shortest) lighthouse still in operation in North Carolina. The current whitewashed lighthouse – standing 76 feet tall – replaced the first Ocracoke Lighthouse which was 55 feet and constructed of wood. This original wooden lighthouse was destroyed in 1818 when it was struck by lightning and burned down to the ground. Located in Ocracoke Village on Ocracoke Island.
