Five Women: Studio Gallery of Elizabeth City
Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Mary Crutchfield has been painting with a group of Elizabeth City women (Margie Sawyer, Peggy West, Patricia Sterritt and Ricky Thornton) for the last 35 years. They also travel together, often painting on location and gaining inspiration for their work. Some of the members of the group have passed away over the years leaving a core group to carry on the creativity of what they call Studio Gallery of Elizabeth City. Despite having kept company for a number of years, each artist has their own style. They will be showcasing watercolors, water media, printmaking and acrylic painting with collage elements. An opening reception will be held on September 7 from 4-6 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The show hours are Mon-Fri 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call (252) 475-1500.

Day at The Docks - A Celebration of Hatteras Island Watermen
Hatteras Village. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Festivities will begin on the working waterfront at 10 am and run until 5 pm.. Cooking demonstrations feature recipes ranging from traditional favorites, such as fish cakes and stewed fish, to dishes using skate and other unusual species. Commercial fishing boats, charter-boats, and fishing gear will be on display at the waterfront. Captains and crews will demonstrate the tools and skills working watermen use at sea. Exhibits feature pound nets, gill nets, crab pots, tuna kites, long-lines, and circle hooks. Fishermen and festival-goers are invited to compete in a net hanging contest, a concrete marlin competition, and a survival suit race. Special activities for children include a fishing contest, fish identification game, blue crab races, and a scavenger hunt. Exhibits on fishing regulations, boating safety, and marine resource conservation are in the big tent. There is no admission charge, and guests are invited to witness the local fishing fleet sail into the harbor for the Blessing of the Fleet at 5:30 pm. For more information visit dayatthedocks.org

The Ravel Trio
4 p.m. Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park. The Ravel Trio will captivate the audience with its conversational concert style and musical passion. In addition to annual tours to Switzerland, the group maintains an increasingly active schedule in the Mid -Atlantic Region which includes formal recitals, house concerts, performances with orchestras and choral groups, and residencies with a Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour program. The group also continues its partnership with the Jezic Ensemble, a women's choral group based in both Washington and Baltimore, presenting yearly events during Women's History Month. Additionally, the Ravel Trio performs “Peace” Concerts often in collaboration with a dancer/actor, special concerts featuring works by American, Swiss, Asian and Asian-American living composers, and wine concerts. In the Ravel Trio, each player is an accomplished solo artist and chamber musician with performances at Carnegie's Recital Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, and the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Kennedy Center, and the Peabody.
